John Laherty (son)      Posted:    8:01 PM December 21, 2012

Alex (Joe) Laherty lived at 98 Daley Street opposite the park on the corner of Glen Street and Daley street from 1954 until 1972. With his wife Kath, they were active members of the community. Joe was President of the Glenroy North State School Committee and Hadfield branch of the ALP. Joe was a waterside worker with a wide range of interests including bee keeping and gardening. He raised many flowering gum seedlings and planted these out in the school and at at this park. Unfortunately the block the park occupies was never served by a water supply so he was obliged to bucket water across the road to keep the young trees alive. Only a few survived the attention of vandals. The trees at the school fared better. The play equipment was often also vandalized and whenever Joe was around and some drongo was hell bent on damaging the gear, he'd call across Daley Street asking them if they wanted an axe. I'm afraid the irony was usually lost on these dim-witted dills but if they didn't understand his humour they usually understood the implied threat and desisted. After Joe's death the City of Broadmeadows named this park in his honour.
