Gold deposits of Spring Creek were mined by the Rocky Mountain Gold Sluicing Company until 1921. In 1928 the sluiced area was dammed and Lake Sambell created. The facilities around Lake Sambell are the result of 20 years work by the community. The area includes a playground, bird sanctuary, two Chinese Lions at the entrance, Chinese Gardens, rail trail passes through this area, a 2 km walking path around the lake and artworks by local artists.

The playground is completely under shade sails and located on the banks of man-made Lake Sambell. The main structure has a spiral slide, climbing wall, platform with binoculars and fireman's pole, walkway, crazy angled climber, hanging disks, rope climbing frame, monkey bars, balance beam, little wave slide, steps, clock, panels and a lovely row of shop fronts including Blacksmith, Bank, Sweets Shop and Bakery. Also springer, stand-on spinner, see-saw, flying fox and four swings including one with a harness.

BBQs under a shelter, shaded and unshaded tables and seats. Toilets further along the lake.

Update from the Lake Sambell Management Committee in July 2010 - The canoe launching area near the replaced boat ramp is nearly completed. In early August, a new Amenities Block with toilets, baby change room, swimming changing cubicle will be completed on the left side of the playground. Lake Sambell is safe for swimming and the beach area in front of the playground is a very popular site throughout the warm season. One of the artworks is a granite labyrinth (network of winding passages/maze) which is very popular with young children.
