We are dedicated teachers striving to create an atmosphere for students to experience the love of dance, joy, freedom and discipline through the various styles of dance that we offer. We encourage students to explore their potential with small classes for personalized teaching. We would like dance accessible to all children whatever their needs and regardless of their ability, and that they be given the opportunity to express themselves through dance.
At Elegant School of Dance we teach many forms of dance:
Classical Ballet (Cecchetti)
The timeless Cecchetti Principles of grace, balance and line form the basis of a sound training syllabus that has been developed to meet the needs of today’s students – teaching co-ordination, poise, confidence, and musicality, while ensuring that the process is still fun! The syllabus has been carefully structured to ensure that the student receives a well-balanced training with each level for younger dancers designed to build progressively to the senior levels.
Pre-Primary and Primary students take one class per week. For all other ballet students it is recommended to take two classes per week. This helps to keep a good standard, better understanding and knowledge of the exercises. The students are aiming for coordination, improved posture, grace flow of line, brilliance in jumps and turns, discipline and musicality. Students will be put onto pointe when they have attained selected important criteria.
Rather than emphasizing technique per se, which is seen more as a tool for the dancer and a means by which to strengthen the body, increase flexibility, and through a deliberate exposure of the contemporary dancer to a wide range of techniques to ensure versatility, contemporary dance as a field is more concerned with examining the choreographic and performing process: as a result there has been limited development of dance techniques by seminal dance artists. Instead, contemporary dance draws on modern dance techniques and an array of still developing philosophies of movement based on study of the human body and body/mind inter-relationships. Unlike classical ballet, contemporary dance often utilizes ground work and the dancers often perform in bare feet.
Creative Movement for 3 & 4 yrs olds
Creative Movement classes are conducted with teacher and students, parents may stay until the student is comfortable in the class, should this be required. These classes have been devised with a two year program with differing themes each term. During these classes the students will be taught the basics of all dance with the use of props, coordination exercises, mime, improvisation whilst nurturing the love and enjoyment of dance. This has been developed for students of Kinder Age and designed to improve co-ordination and balance, memory development and concentration. Students have fun with dance and movement performed to music that children love and enjoy.
Classes are designed to develop rhythm, co-ordination, technique and confidence. We at Elegant School of Dance would like students between the ages of 6 and 8 years old to be Tap dancing with another style of dance. Apart from being an essential skill for the professional dancer, tap dance is one of the most enjoyable and rhythmic forms of recreational dance.
Jazz classes are conducted for students in prep and up. Classes are designed to develop rhythm, co-ordination, technique, confidence, fitness and stretching for greater flexibility. Contemporary classes are in between ballet and jazz.
Hip hop dance refers to dance styles, mainly street dance styles, primarily danced to hip hop music, or that have evolved as a part of the hip hop culture.
