Established in 1992, our swimming program was set up primarily through frustration of a lack of quality program available to swimmers in the North-West of Melbourne. This included extensions to Junior squads and Elite training squads. In the time since, we have established a program operating from four facilities that provides for pre-schoolers through to National level swimmers.
Our background derives from competitive swimming and has a focus on the teaching of all strokes with correct technique and fluency. Our approach is to be amiable and thorough without being overly persistent in developing children before their time. This gentle balance is proven to work in the various levels of squads available.
We believe in small classes in the early stages of development, which has been a fundamental in the success of our Learn to Swim program. As well as their professional credentials, our staff are trained regularly through in-house' sessions which focus on both teaching of swimming and human development. We pride ourselves in recruiting many of our staff from senior swimmers in our squad training programs, so that they can bring their own swim training experience and expertise into their teaching.
Whether you are wanting your child to learn to swim, are after a program that extends to squad training, or are just wanting an adult fitness squad, Elite Swimming Performance can cater to your needs.
The pool is designed for water instruction, it is 5 lanes x 15 metres, which helps to create an optimal learning environment where children can concentrate during their lessons, minimising external distractions. The depth of the pool is .75m - 1.5m in depth and a comfortable water temperature where students feel safe to enjoy the water. The program at this pool is aimed at learn to swim and 'junior squads' and is structured similarly to lessons in our other facilities.
All our classes focus on developing each child's swimming skills. We focus on teaching the four main competitive strokes as well as regular water safety skill development. Children learn best when having fun so all our lessons aim to develop each child's self confidence through new drills and regular recognition of their achievements.
All swimmers are assessed prior to beginning the program in order to best assess which level will allow your child to grow and develop the most. In addition, ongoing program management takes place throughout the term, to prepare your child to make the step up to the next level.
Our Ascot Vale and Pascoe Vale pool caters for Children from 2 1/2 - 3 years of age. Pre-school classes are not "water - play" based program's. The focus is on encouraging children to gain confidence through kick work, buoyancy, breathing, water safety and the basics of good technique.
Our school age learn to Swim program is divided into 5 levels and links into a comprehensive squad program. The program is designed to allow the individual swimmers optimum development with minimal disruption due to teacher changes. All lessons operate during the school term with holiday programs from time to time.
Squad swimming is a natural extension from learn to swim. Our squad programs aim to continue the development of competitive strokes while working on some of the finer points such as dives turns and finishing.
The programs all have an aerobic endurance base to establish early some good fitness patterns and lay the path to improvement and life long participation. However there is also an emphasis on sprinting to enable swimmers to improve their best times, encouraging a positive and competitive learning environment.
The squad programs we offer are all aligned with and supported by Moonee Valley Aquatic Swimming Club
The squad programs on offer are:
Learn to Swim Levels
- Mini Squads
- Competitive Squads
- Senior Squads
- Recreational Squads
- Sinkers Adult Squad
This is the entry level of our school age program. Teachers focus on the children developing confidence in the water. Children in these classes develop their water safety skills until they can kick continuously and unassisted for 15m and can swim 10m independently. The lessons are 30 min long and have 4 children scheduled into each class.
Entry pre-requisite for this class is the ability to swim 10m of freestyle and backstroke, independently. Swimmers will continue to develop these strokes, further refining their skills and technique in freestyle and backstroke. Children remain in this group until they are able to swim 25m freestyle and 25m backstroke with correct technique. The lessons are 30 min long and have a maximum of 5 children scheduled into each class.
Swimmers can enter this level once they have developed correct technique and can swim 25m of freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers will begin learning breaststroke and improving their strength and stamina in the freestyle and backstroke. Lessons are 30 min long and have up to 6 scheduled in each class.
Advanced Learn To Swim
These classes involve one 40 min session per week. Children will be introduced to swimming in a small squad and will develop their freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke as well as begin to learn butterfly. Swimmers are expected to bring their own flippers to each session. These classes have up to ten scheduled in each session.
This is the first step in squad training. Children will learn how to operate in a squad environment and developing the skills required for training (e.g. following a pace clock, turns etc). The children will aim to develop strength and endurance in all strokes.
Once a child reaches this level they are assessed and placed into our squad program.
