North Lodge Swimming Academy

We have been doing this for a long time... North Lodge Swimming Academy was designed and built in 1966 by former Olympian Jim O'Doherty.

The Pools - The 25 metre heated pool and 8 metre "Mini Pool" were designed for the purpose of teaching people of all ages to swim in water of a depth in which they can comfortably stand and in an environment where they feel safe and secure; this enables us to achieve the very best results.

The Program - We have an excellent group of qualified staff who are experienced, committed and friendly. We offer an excellent swimming program with well controlled and disciplined classes, offering excellent value for money. The emphasis on our program is to develop strong, safe swimmers with a healthy respect for the aquatic environment.

The Swimming Club - We have our own Swimming Club, O'Doherty's Swimming Team, for swimmers interested in competing at Club, Interclub, State and National levels.

Classes - Our classes are small and well controlled by qualified, experienced instructors.
Our aim is to develop strong, safe swimmers with a healthy respect for the aquatic environment.

Rowan French      Posted:    11:27 PM June 3, 2016

Hi, My name is Rowan French, I have a story that I want to share, about my swimming coach Jim O'Doherty back in 1969.I resided directly opposite Northlodge at 144 Stud Rd. I swam 4 times or more per week. On a holiday with my parents on the Gold Coast, at the Apollo Hotel in 1971, a tanned, slim youngish guy, dark hair and moustache, asked me, "Who taught you to swim "? He had been watching me swim the length(25mtrs) of the pool and tumble turning at each end. I said "Jim O'Doherty,,he was an olympic swimmer" I said with great pride, since he took the time to watch and comment on my swimming. He asked me if he could show me how to lay on the bottom of the pool? I said "yes, that would be great", so he did just that, for a greater length of time than I believed was possible. When he got out of the pool I asked him what do you "Do"?? He said I am studying to be a Doctor, "OK" I said. That was all we said. One year later I saw him on the Olympic podium, Mark Spitz. I was amazed. He noticed what Jim had taught me, enough to approach and engage with me. Please say hello to Susan O'doherty and Rod , if they remember. Cheers Rowan French.
