Beautifully crafted location with lots of elements which kids should love. This attraction is constantly changing and improving. For example, since our last visit, the maize maze on the hill has been replaced by tube slides, an indoor maze has been built and Tree Surfing (additional cost) has been added to the tree canopy.
After a visit here, the word "dead-end" will definitely be added to your children's vocabulary. There are four permanent mazes (hedge maze, turf maze, children's maze and Blue Gum gallery maze).
The Hedge Maze has over 500 Leighten Green conifers and was inspired by the famous Hampton Court maze, but with an oriental twist. You need to find five Buddhas, a small topiary garden and then relax in the tranquil Japanese Garden in the centre. This maze is ideal for the parents and kids because it is not so large that you have to spend a frustrating amount of time finding your way through the maze. The paths between the hedges are generally nice and wide.
The Turf Maze is actually a labyrinth which means you follow one path. Dating back to the Middle Ages, these labyrinths were laid out on the floors of Cathedrals where the monks would meander in prayer and meditation. The length is around 450 meters and kids can race to see who can do it the quickest while the parents can tranquilly stroll along the paths.
The Children's Maze is a real fun maze which is designed for children to stop and play. There is a beach hut with pier (sand buckets provided), African Savannah with African animals, dinosaur, chicken coop, Fairy Garden and central shady area with a game of Snakes and Ladders on the ground.
The Blue Gum gallery maze is a more open fairly easy maze. The hardest aspect was to avoid all the spider's webs between the walls.
The tube slides are a big hit with the kids (maybe less so for Dad if he has to pull the tubes up the hill). There are four courses; two straight, one with a single curve and another with two curves. There are single and double tubes and you can have an adult and child in either. You can be any age to ride on the tube slides but those under five years of age must ride in a double tube with an adult. It is possible to have races against each other and the staff were very accommodating and helped generate a fun atmosphere.
The dark indoor maze with 3D effects was a bit scary for the younger kids and includes a bridge with revolving cylindrical walls (which does have a tunnel bypass), unexpected loud noises and a floor which appears like you are walking through a layer of mist.
There are plenty of other activities including an area with brain teaser challenges (tyre maze, rope maze, upstairs-downstairs maze, rocky road maze), obstacle course, a small animal farm (chicken, goat, sheep and a goose), sculpture park which has large sculptures carved out of tree stumps and plenty of interesting little gardens such as the Marble Sculpture Garden, Conifer Garden, Columbian Pot Garden and Weeping Willows Garden.
There is a lot of shade everywhere but it is advisable to take a water bottle into the bigger mazes.
There is a cafe serving food such as pies, hot dogs, salad rolls, drinks and ice-cream and a lovely shaded terrace to sit on. There is also a lolly shop with a big range of lollies and kids souvenirs. For kids who have the required licking stamina, there are huge lollipops for $25. There is a restaurant next door with reasonable prices including afternoon tea.
Make sure you wear comfortable shoes to fully enjoy the day. This is not the location to be wearing high heels.
