Princes Park Playground, Birch Street, Caulfield South

Princes Park Playground, Birch Street, Caulfield South

Playground is built around two levels. Main structure is a series of curved ramps with slides (straight, spiral, wave) with steps, climbing mat, chain climbing frame, fireman's pole, monkey bars, hanging disks and plenty of coloured balls and disks. Play area for toddlers in a train shape, see-saw, two springers and stand-on spinner. On the higher level is a small surfboard suspended from poles, an area with unusual musical instruments and a huge rope climbing frame like a big ball. Four swings including one with harness and there is a climbing wall between the levels. Basketball court nearby. Playground gets a good degree of shade from shade cloths and trees.

BBQs, sheltered tables and seats, toilets and water tap. The park also has cricket, football, lawn bowls, soccer, tennis, basketball and netball rings, pavilion and sensory garden.

Note: The playground has been upgraded since this review. It includes and expression swing.

There are three picnic shelters located at Princes Park:
  • Maple Street rotunda - located off Maple Street, close to the bowls club. This rotunda has one picnic table with BBQ facilities located next to the rotunda.
  • Birch Street rotunda - located off Birch Street, a large rotunda with two picnic tables. There are no BBQ facilities next to this rotunda.
  • Beech Street rotunda - located closest to the carpark off Beech Street and basketball ring. There is one picnic table with BBQ facilities located next to the rotunda.
In 1923 part of the local area became known as Shilabeer's Paddock, which acted as a sandpit and refuse disposal area. It was later developed into around 10 hectares of parkland - the origins of what we now call Princes Park.

Access for Dogs:

  • All sportsgrounds at Princes Park are off-leash areas. Please respect the shared use of these sportsgrounds by ensuring that dogs are on-leash within 20m of a sporting activity.
  • The western end of Princes Park is an on-leash area. This on-leash area includes the playground, rotunda, picnic area, car parks and open space along Hawthorn Road.
