Dance Styles & Levels

Classical Ballet
It's long been advised to take ballet as the main dance subject with all other styles as complimentary extras. Classical ballet training strengthens and improves technique and overall dance quality in all styles of dance. A student learning ballet will gain skill, discipline, poise, grace, body alignment, flexibility, musicality, creativity and confidence. Students with a sound classical training can pick up most other styles of dance with great ease. Students start to learn the basics in preschool and prep. Exams begin in an informal manner at Pre Junior level (grade 1) where the teacher enters the room with students and conducts the exam. At Sub Junior level (grade2) it is essential to participate in two classical classes per week to establish the muscle recruitment and co ordination required to develop correct technique. This is when students begin to feel the benefits of this hard work and when the foundation of good technique starts to consolidate. This is when the true passion for dance appears. Students will continue with two ballet classes per week throughout the primary school years with exam & concert work being studied in the 2nd class. From high school age onwards, 2 -3 classes per week are required for the major exams and further development to continue exam work in class time. It's important to note that ballet is a technical art form that takes time to master, but is extremely rewarding when you do.

Jazz
Jazz is a modern form of dance with the latest moves and the latest music. Students commence jazz exams in class at Pre Junior level (grade 1) through to level 7 After Level 7, students move to open classes and no longer study exams in regular class. Higher exam levels are offered as additional classes through to Level 10.

Tap
Tap is an old and modern mix of dance with metal plates on shoes. Students commence tap exams in class at Pre Junior level (grade 1) through to level 5. After Level 5 students move to open classes and no longer study exams in regular class. Higher exam levels are offered as additional classes through to Level 10.

Contemporary
A very popular art form, performed by many professional companies today. A combination of jazz & classical styles. Classes start from Junior levels and progress through to advanced level. Students must be doing at least one classical ballet class to participate, as contemporary is a very technical style.

Hip Hop
A fun class with all the latest in street dance. Lots of fun & loads of energy needed for this one!

EBC (Elite Body Conditioning and Acro)
This class is a fusion of acrobatics, core conditioning, stretching & strength training. Students learn a greater functional awareness and control of their body, to improve balance, mobility, flexibility and injury prevention. The emphasis is on preparing the body to extend the dancer and support the work requirements for examinations and competitions, and if desired a future in dance.

Prep Dance - Students are in Prep at school
For students just starting school. Classes are offered as a combination of Jazz, Tap and Ballet in 30min blocks to allow the student opportunity to do all 3 or just 1-2 styles. These classes are excellent for co-ordination, balance, use of space, confidence, developing motor skills, musicality, creativity and broadening the attention span. There are no formal exams at this level, but students do participate in our end of year concert.

Pre-school Dance - 4/5 yrs
For Pre schoolers aged 4-5 years old. A combination of Ballet, Jazz & Tap. These classes are excellent for co-ordination, balance, use of space, confidence, developing motor skills, musicality, creativity and broadening the attention span. This class provides a vital stepping stone to the child's dance training. There are no exams in this class, but students do take part in our end of year concerts.

Tiny Toes - 2/3 yrs
