Jacinda Ardern Silo Art (Brunswick)

Jacinda Ardern Silo Art (Brunswick)

On an old grain silo towering over the railway lines in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick is a large mural of New Zealand's former prime minister Jacinda Ardern. The mural was painted by artist Loretta Lizzio in May 2019.

The mural is based on a famous image taken in March 2019, just days after a terrorist attack killed 50 Muslims praying at two mosques in Christchurch. The resultant outpouring of grief was felt around the world. In particular it was exemplified in the compassion shown by Ardern when visiting the survivors and families of the victims.

The image shows New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern embracing a Muslim woman after the Christchurch mosque attacks. According to the organisers, it was an image which had become a beacon of tolerance, love and peace in divisive times.
