Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve (Croydon North)

Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve (Croydon North)

Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve is 18.6 hectares of forest situated at the southern end of the Great Dividing Range. It is the largest and most botanically diverse flora reserve in Maroondah. As you walk along the tracks, scan the sides of the paths for interesting birds, flowers, bushes and trees.

The reserve was named after the Hochkins family who sold the property to the State Government and Croydon City Council. In 1983-84 it became a crown land reserve with the purpose of preserving indigenous flora and fauna and a Committee of Management was appointed.

The flora within the reserve includes long leaf boxes and red stringybark - messmate and peppermint eucalypts. The understorey includes 14 varieties of wattle, orchids (27 species) and various members of the lily family.

There are walking paths throughout the reserve but there are no track names or signs. The tracks generally follow a north - south direction and you can use Google maps on your phone to work out your location relative to where you parked. The east side follows a line of houses.

At one of the entrances, at Neuparth Road, there is a basic playground outside the reserve.
