Geelong Model Boat Club (Waurn Ponds)
Geelong Model Boat Club is a group of enthusiasts that enjoy the hobby of marine modelling.
The Geelong Model Boat Club is an informal group that gathers twice a month to sail their models, socialise and discuss the various aspects of the hobby.
Our models range from yachts, scale warships, submarines, tugs, fishing boats and steam powered models.
We sail on the first and third Sundays of the month, with the exception of special events.
We sail on a small lake situated within the grounds of Deakin University Waurn Ponds Campus. We are currently sailing on the lake on the left hand side of Nicol Drive North, next to the Optometry building, however we sometimes sail on another lake, at the rear of the main building complex, next to the library. We do this, as we encounter a problem with weeds growing in the water. These weeds tend to come and go, as they are not managed by Deakin's groundskeeper. So, if we are not at the first lake, there is a possibility that we could be at the other lake, and we apologise for not informing everyone in adequate time, as we often decide on arrival and on initial inspection of the lake. Sailing times from approximately 9am onwards, with no official start or finish times.
Anyone with an interest in the hobby, young and young at heart can join our club! However, keeping safety in mind we encourage any 'youth' to be accompanied by parental supervision at all times as we are a water activity and the lake we operate on is deceptively deep.
The Geelong Model Boat Club puts on a display twice a year, May and November, at the Lake Goldsmith steam Rally.
Due to noise restrictions we do not allow internal combustion engines. Fast electric is permitted, however we ask that common sense be used when other slower boats are in the water at the same time.
Cost:
Being an informal club we do not have any official office bearers, nor are we a financial club. Therefore we do not have membership fees. We often put on tea and coffee and the occasional BBQ, to which members are welcome to put in a small contribution towards.
