Dry Stone Japanese Garden (Werribee)

Dry Stone Japanese Garden (Werribee)

This dry stone Japanese Garden was designed by Koichi Shiroki. It is a joint project of the Rotary Clubs of Werribee and Sapporo North - Japan.

It is a place of spiritual and religious significance. It is based on the 84th psalm and mean for quiet meditation, and deep reflection on your life, your relationships and how you relate to the harmonious balance of nature in order to achieve peace of mind. The rocks and their placement are the most important element in this garden.

1. The tallest stone in the centre is the heaven stone.
2. The large stone on the right is the humanity stone
3. The large stone on the left is the earth stone.
4. The white pebbles represent water coming down from the mountains into the lake.
5. The bamboo water spout signifies cleansing and purification. The ancient monks would symbolically cleanse themselves at the water spout and rock basin before participating in the religious ceremony.
6. The crazy paving is waves on the lake.
7. The pathway and water basin is always lit by a stone lantern.

The garden was constructed in February 1997 in eight days by volunteer labour and donated materials. It was presented to the City of Wyndham by the Rotary Clubs of Sapporo North and Werribee

The Garden is located in the front grounds of the Wyndham Civic Centre.
