Box Hill Brickworks Derelict Site (Box Hill)

Box Hill Brickworks Derelict Site (Box Hill)

Box Hill Brickworks first opened in 1884 and finally closed in 1988, but is now derelict.

The Box Hill Brickworks produced machine and hand made bricks, tiles, earthenware and porcelain during the boom years of the 1880s. However the industry was in decline in the 1890s and in 1892 it suspended production. The site was sold in 1905 and the quarry became the "Surrey Dive" swimming hole. Around 1911 brick production re-started on this site near the dive and in 1913 it became the Standard Brick and Tile Company. After years of changing fortunes and some closures, the Brickworks were closed in August 1988.

Box Hill Brickworks is the last historic remnant of a series of brick and tile producing works which were established between Hawthorn and Mitcham from the 1880s to the 1939-45 war.

The Brickworks is fenced off and not accessible but can be seen from outside the fence. See the links below for photos and virtual tour of the site including inside.
