Australian Music Vault (Central Melbourne)

Australian Music Vault (Central Melbourne)

Created by Arts Centre Melbourne in collaboration with the music industry, the Australian Music Vault is a celebration of Australian contemporary music - its past, present and future.

The Australian Music Vault showcases the Australian music story with interactive and digital experiences. Marvel at iconic objects from the Australian Performing Arts Collection and immerse yourself in the engagement zones with interviews from musicians and promoters sharing their stories.

Discover the role of the trailblazers of the industry, explore the musical influences on the Australian 'sound', see costumes worn by international stars and unlock the stories of hip hop in Australia.

The Amplifier 360-degree immersive experience allows you to feel, see, hear and interact with a rich tapestry of Australian music. Journey back to the sun-filled days of Sunbury, drop into a screaming audience at Countdown, and dive into the heady world of triple J Unearthed; the engine room of contemporary Australian music.

Purchase an Australian Music Vault Mixtape card and curate your personalised Australian music playlist as you explore objects within the exhibition. When you leave, a Spotify playlist of your visit will be emailed to you.

Review:

The Music vault is located in the building which has a spire in top. A lively and interesting area which has a lot of interesting elements for those people yearning for the music of yesteryear. The displays change regularly and it is a place which you can come back to time after time. Free entry (with a gold coin donation appreciated) is the icing on the guitar.

The Sound Booth in the centre of the exhibition space displays images on the walls complemented by music. There were three shows when we visited - Triple J Experience Unearthed, Sunbury Festival Experience and the Countdown Experience. They brought back a lot of great memories.

As well as a wall plastered with concert posters, there are a number of glass display cases with historical items which have interesting stories about them. Some of the themes were The Real Thing - Celebrating our hit makers and behind the scenes heroes and their impact on Aussie music, Hip Hop, Two Way Traffic, Agents of Change and The Wild Ones.
